One fatal mistake that potential students often succumb to is to concentrate on the course itself, instead of focusing on the desired end-result. Training academies have thousands of unaware students that chose a program because it looked interesting - in place of something that could gain them an enjoyable career or job. It's a terrible situation, but the majority of trainees kick-off study that often sounds magnificent in the prospectus, but which gets us a career that is of no interest. Try talking to typical university graduates for a real eye-opener.

Prioritise understanding the exact expectations industry will have. Which precise exams you'll be required to have and how you'll build your experience level. Spend some time considering how far you wish to go as it may affect your choice of exams. Look for help from an experienced professional that has commercial knowledge of your chosen market-place, and will be able to provide 'A typical day in the life of' synopsis of of what you'll be doing on a day-to-day basis. It makes good sense to ensure you're on the right track well before you commence your studies. What's the reason in starting your training only to find you've gone the wrong way entirely.

If you're like many of the students we talk to then you've always enjoyed practical work - the 'hands-on' type. If you're anything like us, the unfortunate chore of reading reference guides can be just about bared when essential, but you'd hate it. Consider interactive, multimedia study if book-based learning really isn't your style. If we're able to get all of our senses involved in our learning, our results will often be quite spectacular.

Fully interactive motion videos involving demonstration and virtual lab's will turn you off book-based study for ever more. And they're a lot more fun to do. All companies should willingly take you through a few examples of their courseware. Make sure you encounter videos of instructor-led classes and a wide selection of interactive elements.

Avoiding training that is delivered purely online is generally a good idea. Physical CD or DVD ROM materials are preferable where offered, so you can use them wherever and whenever you want - it's not wise to be held hostage to a quality and continuous internet connection.

We can see an excess of professional positions up for grabs in the IT industry. Deciding which one could be right for yourself is a mammoth decision. Working through long lists of different and confusing job titles is next to useless. Most of us have no concept what our next-door neighbours do at work each day - so we're in the dark as to the intricacies of a new IT role. Generally, the way to deal with this predicament in the best manner comes from a full talk over several different topics:

- Personality plays a starring role - what gives you a 'kick', and what tasks get you down.

- Are you aiming to accomplish an important goal - for instance, becoming self-employed as quickly as possible?

- What scale of importance is the salary - is it of prime importance, or does job satisfaction rate further up on the priority-scale?

- When taking into account all that computing covers, it's obvious you'll need to be able to understand what is different.

- You'll also need to think hard about what kind of effort and commitment you'll put into gaining your certifications.

To bypass the barrage of jargon, and reveal the best route for you, have an in-depth discussion with an industry-experienced advisor; a person who will cover the commercial realities and truth and of course each qualification.

A knowledgeable and professional consultant (in contrast with a salesperson) will want to thoroughly discuss your abilities and experience. There is no other way of understanding your starting level of study. With a strong background, or sometimes a little live experience (possibly even some previous certification?) then obviously your starting point will be very different from someone who is just starting out. Commencing with a user skills module first will sometimes be the most effective way to get up and running on your IT training, but depends on your skill level.
